The A1 has an assortment of petrol engines to choose from. The affordable 25 TFSI 5-speed returns up to 51.4 mpg, though you shouldn’t expect hot-hatch level acceleration. If you want something with a little more get-up-and-go, the 35 TFSI S Tronic is much more exciting. 

The A1 may be small, but there’s no doubt it leaves a big impression. The wide, low-sitting ‘singleframe’ front grille and side air inlets are suitably sporty and reminiscent of Audi’s flagship R8. Inside, all A1s are equipped with Audi’s high-quality materials, as well as an 8.8-inch digital touch screen, 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit display, and a three-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel.

There’s also plenty of room to pimp your ride. Plump for S Line Competition or Vorsprung trims and you’ll also get red brake callipers, sport suspension, and superb 18-inch ‘5-double-arm’ design alloy wheels in a matte titanium look. 

The A1 doesn’t have many competitors around the same size and price. There’s the Mini Hatchback which offers comparable refinement in an equally small package. Alternatively, you could check out the slightly larger Mercedes A Class Hatchback or the slightly less glamorous Volkswagen Polo.
