BMW offers a choice of two petrol engines and three diesel engines, and either six-speed or eight-speed gearboxes. The entry-level 116d diesel is an enticing offering for the frugal family man, offering 62.8mpg depending on the trim. But the performance-oriented professional might be more interested in the petrol M1351i with its 302bhp 2.0 litre engine and four-wheel drive capable of 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds. 

And of course, impressive performance is matched by a purposeful exterior. BMW’s signature bull-snorting kidney grille adorns the front of the car; the 1 Series poised to charge after every red light!

Behind the car’s aggressive exterior is a premium, welcoming interior, capable of fitting two six-footers comfortably in the rear. High quality materials are used even in the entry-level SE trim, and a 9-inch infotainment system comes as standard. There’s plenty of room to up-spec, with Tech Pack 1 and 2 providing a larger infotainment screen, wireless charging, a heads-up display and Harman Kardon stereo system. 

There’s also plenty of practicality. A 380 litre boot with a false floor provides ample storage space and a flat floor when the rear seats are folded down. 

The BMW 1 Series faces some stiff competition from other luxury German hatchbacks like the Audi A3 Sportback and the Mercedes A Class Hatchback.
