Ultimately, the top speed comes down to a choice of options. It’s 155mph as standard, but if you’re feeling flush, you can up that to 190mph.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen sits between the driver and passenger and provides easy access to BMW’s class-leading iDrive infotainment system, which can also be operated using the scroll wheel, if you’re old-school. 

In spite of all its excess, the M5 is actually incredibly easy to live with. It’s 530-litre boot is almost cavernous, and the rear seats will easily seat a few six-footers.
