The Ultimate Car Buying/Leasing Guide

So, it's time to buy or lease a new car, eh? Well you've come to the right place! For this section, we've rounded up all our automotive experts and have pooled our collective experience!

Covering everything from budgets and insurance to fuel types and practicality, this section should teach you absolutely everything you need to know to get you on the road!

Let's get started!

How Do I Set My Car Budget?

Unless you carry your wallet around in a helicopter, your car budget is probably quite an important thing. Unfortunately, setting a car budget is a fairly complicated task that requires you to think about a million things at once.

Well, don't fret much longer! In this section, I've separated out the costs and dealt with them all individually.

After a high-level look at a car leasing contract, I take a look at the three main types of payments: upfront, monthly and extra.

  • Initial Rental: This is basically a deposit but you can’t call it a deposit because you aren’t buying the car. Since you're leasing, what you're paying is an initial payment or initial rental. To make it even more confusing, the initial payment is (almost) always quoted as a multiple of the monthly payment. Usually you are able to pay three, six, nine or 12 times the monthly payment. The initial rental is a bit of a nightmare to get your head around but it's worth spending some time on it. Check out my article here for more info.
  • Monthly Payment: Your monthly payment is exactly what it says on the tin — the amount you pay to your leasing broker every month. For more info on how your monthly payment is calculated, check out my article here.
  • Extra: The two most common extra charges are excess mileage and damage. I go into the details more in my article here.

After that, I dig into repairs. Now, who pays for repairs is a bit of a complicated question. Since all lease cars are new, you're (usually) covered by the manufacturer's warranty. However, the warranty rarely covers everything and leaves you out of pocket for things like worn tyres and broken glass.

Finally, I take a quick look at insurance, including GAP insurance, then wrap it up with some fuel efficiency tips.

What Car Fuel is Right for Me?

When you're leasing a new car in the past, you've had to decide between getting a petrol model and getting a diesel model. Now, however, things are a bit more complicated. In this section I take a tour through all the major fuel points you should think about in 2018.

First, I look at petrol and diesel, highlighting the differences between then. Along with this, I answer the question: "Should I lease a diesel car in 2018?" Like most things, it's not simple and doesn't have a simple answer.

Next, I ask whether now is the right time to jump across to hybrid or all-electric technology. Again, it's not a simple question and different people will give you different answers. Check out the full posts on hybrids and all-electric cars more detailed responses.

Finally, I put together some lists for the most fuel efficient cars on LeaseFetcher, the best petrol cars on LeaseFetcher and the best diesel cars on LeaseFetcher.

If you've got any in-depth fuel questions, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

What Car Bodystyle Should I Choose?

When it's time to lease a new car, the style of car you pick is incredibly important. If you need a lot of space, a city car just won't do. On the flip side, if you live in the centre of a historic city and have to deal with tight twisty streets, you'll struggle with an SUV.

In this section, I take a look at all the major bodystyles, covering saloons, superminis, coupes, crossovers, hatchbacks, fastbacks, hardtops and more! Seriously, by the end of this section, you'll be able to blag your way through a networking event hosted by Top Gear!

Next, I look at some popular bodystyle comparisons, hammering out the differences then discussing the best use cases for each. The bodystyle I look at are:

If you think I've missed out any glaring bodystyle comparisons, let me know in the comments!
