The Ultimate Guide to Car Technology

Today's cars are nothing like the cars of the '50s, '60s or '70s. They're safer, smarter, cleaner and... well... better. And today's cars will be nothing like the car's of tomorrow, especially if autonomous technology gains a real foothold.

In this car technology section, we investigate current and emerging car technologies, ranging from engines and fuels to smartphone connectivity and self-driving tech.

So, check out the sections below and let us know if we missed anything in the comments!

Everything You Need To Know About Cars and Connectivity

There’s a three-way car technology battle going on right now for control of your car’s dashboard. On one side are the manufacturers. On the other are the mobile tech companies, Google and Apple.

In this section, I take a look at the two biggest mobile infotainment systems available right now: Android Auto from Google and CarPlay from Apple.

I also do in-depth comparison of the two, which is available here.

What Autonomous Technology Is Available?

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about all the autonomous car technology that's coming out at the moment. While Tesla and Google have stolen most of the headlines, every single manufacturer is working hard to make their cars smarter and safer.

This section is kind of split in two. First, I look at the autonomous driving levels set out by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). These levels range from level 0 (no automation) all the way up to level 5 (full automation) and really help you understand where the technology is at the moment.

The second part of the section covers some of the most common assistance technologies available right now. They are:

The second section is far from exhaustive and I know that there are dozens of other assistance systems I could have looked at. If there are any systems you would like to hear about in more detail, just leave a comment and I'll add it to the list!

Definitive Guide to Car Engines and Fuel Technology

Most of us have an inkling of how basic forms of car technology works. Most of us know that cars are powered by an engine and we know that these engines need fuel to work.

For a lot of people, that’s as far as their mechanical knowledge of how those wheels turn actually goes though. And understanding a fundamental aspect of your car’s technology, like the engine, is really important for helping you choose the right lease car.

In this section, I go right back to the start and work through the history of petrol and diesel, then take a look at some emerging technologies like:

  • Basic Hybrids
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)
  • Alternative Fuels
  • All-electric Vehicles

It's a super broad topic so there are inevitably bits that I skipped over or touched on lightly. If you want to hear more about a particular topic, just leave me a comment and I'll jump back in.
