Commercially viable electric cars could be one of the biggest developments in engine technology this side of Ford's Model T.

The days when you could only drive as far as the end of the road without needing to charge your battery are over. Car technology has developed to a point where you can drive for hundreds of miles before recharging the batteries single charge. Better yet, they’re also exceptionally quiet, cheap to run and offer the same levels of space as ordinary family cars.

All of this makes electric cars perfect for a growing family.

If you’re tempted by what they have to offer and want to find out more, you’re in luck. Here’s my list of the best family electric cars available at the moment.

If you’ve got a family or you’re planning on having one in the future, getting a car with enough space and the right, family-friendly features should be a no-brainer.

The Kia Soul is probably your best bet in that situation.

This is the second generation version and it’s fair to say that it massively improves on the first. It benefits from a redesigned chassis that makes it easier to handle, an improved range of 132 miles and a 81.4 kilowatt electric motor that delivers 109 bhp.

In terms of those all-important family features, the Kia Soul is an SUV so you won’t be short of luggage space or legroom.

You can’t fault BMW on their work-ethic.

Whilst a lot of manufacturers seem happy to spend years developing an electric vehicle, releasing it and then waiting for the notes to roll in, BMW has constantly improved the i3 from the very first day it launched. The result is an intuitive family car that’s a genuine pleasure to drive.

In terms of practicality, the i3 is up there with the best in its field. You’ll get an incredible 205 miles out of it, intuitive BMW tech and 260 litres of luggage space. There’s also a state-of-the-art infotainment system with Apple Play and an online entertainment system – a must have when it comes to pacifying bored kids on long journeys.

If your family don’t really stray too much from the concrete jungle, the Smart ForFour is the family electric car to seriously consider. Compact, lightweight but importantly, not cramped, the ForFour manages to deliver everything you’d expect from a conventional family car, whilst also being really cheap to run. You only get 180 litres of space in the boot but you do get a massive 960 litres when you fold down the back seats too.

Unlike petrol and diesel competitors for the coveted city car market, the ForFour doesn’t give off any emissions either, thanks to the fact that it’s electric, making it exempt from the London Congestion Charge.
