Turbo-charged engines, state-of-the-art braking systems and cutting edge car technology and engine technology is all well and good, but sometimes the thing that we really want in a car is a bit of luxury.

And there’s a lot of luxury to choose from, specifically when it comes to cars that use hybrid technology.

So I’ve made a list of them. Here are five of the best luxury hybrid cars that I rate pretty highly.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is pretty much the quintessential Merc. It sums up why the brand has been associated with luxury for over 50 years. This hybrid version has better looks, a better range of technology and it’s much easier to use than a lot of its rivals. It also commands a none too shabby 113 mpg, thanks to the petrol-electric hybrid engine.

Okay, it might be slightly on the pricey side, you can’t put a price on luxury as the saying goes. It’s at the top end of a lot of people’s budgets, but the Range Rover is many things to many people, ranging from Chelsea tractor in the city to actual tractor in the countryside. For all its practicality though, with a hefty 2.0-litre engine that packs a punch and a state-of-the-art electric drivetrain, there’s no denying the sheer sumptuous of the SUV.

Highlights of the interior attention to detail include over 17 media connection points scattered throughout the cabin, along with the option of massage seats (yes, you read that right) in the rear seats.

Remember BMW’s hugely successful BMW 5-Series model? Well, here’s the petrol/ plugin-in electric hybrid version to blow your socks off. It’s got all the luxury that you’d expect from a 5 Series  – think 249bhp to play with – with the added benefit of exceptional fuel efficiency, letting you hit 141.2mpg.

State of the art plug-in hybrid technology could almost replace the diesel engine in the Porsche Cayenne, in terms of power and efficiency, with an overall total power output of 469bhp. Now in its third generation, the Cayenne hasn’t changed much in terms of looks, but the updated hybrid petrol/electric technology makes all the difference in terms of performance.  Its handling is also exceptional, responding with an agility and precision that few other hybrid SUVs can match. In fact it doesn’t actually feel like you’re driving a comparatively big SUV at all.

Volvo describes itself as elegant and functional and it’s hard to disagree with that statement.

It has elegance in excess! Just look at the sculpted bodywork, spacious interior and upmarket materials used in the cabin.

But that’s not at the expense of functionality. The Volvo S90 is a classy petrol-electric hybrid that only emits the modest figure of 48g/km of CO2 and manages 134.5 mpg.

Whilst Volvo hasn't had much luck in the executive sector, the S90's sheer sumptuousness means that this model’s in with more than a fighting chance of success.
