Car insurance can be eye-watering if you’re a new driver or you’re an accident-prone driver. However, the driver is only one part of the story. The car you’re insuring also plays a big part in determining how cheap (or expensive) your policy is.

Cars are classified in insurance group bands, which run from Group 1 (cheap) to Group 50 (expensive).

At the moment, there are 13 cars in Group 1: Kia Rio, Ford Ka+, Hyundai i10, Volkswagen Fox, SEAT Mii, Volkswagen Up, Skoda Citigo, Chevrolet Spark, Smart ForFour, Nissan Micra, Fiat Panda and Vauxhall Corsa.

For this article, I’ve cast the net a bit wider, considering Group 2 cars as well as Group 1. So here are my 5 favourite cars that are super cheap to insure.

The Micra’s got an unfair reputation for being boring, ugly and slow. It’s undeserved, because the newer Micra is actually pretty sleek and quite attractive. Okay, it’s only a 1.0-litre but if you’re just really using it for commuting and not trans-continental expeditions, you’ll be fine with it! The new look Micra is a bit like a Jack Russell terrier: it’s small but it’s got a pretty powerful bite.

The pretty decent thing about the hatchback Corsa is that it’s a perfect car for first-time drivers, without looking obviously like it is. The new look model is user-friendly and has fairly good handling, so it makes a good first choice for someone who hasn’t had that much experience of driving.

Now on its sixth generation, the Polo is obviously getting something right otherwise it wouldn’t still be around and so popular.  The latest incarnation benefits from cutting-edge digital tech (did someone say blind spot detection and pedestrian tracking?) and a carefully re-designed interior, improving practicality and giving you a lot more usable space. Some versions of the car are in group 1, so they can offer low prices when it comes to insurance.

It’s probably the most popular option for first time drivers and for people looking to save money on their driving. There’s no denying that the humble Ford Fiesta has been one of the most popular first cars of choice for several generations over 40 years. It looks great without sacrificing too much performance, like acceleration and fuel efficiency. It’s got a decent amount of interior space and storage. And the newer versions have a range of digital tech too. When you add the fact that the car is pretty damn cheap to insure, the Ford Fiesta looks like an attractive option if you want a decent car without paying too much.

Even though it’s the car of choice for the budding boy racer, the Seat Ibiza is another surprisingly cheap car to insurance if you’re a sensible driver and you’ve got the no claims bonus to prove it. It’s a pretty powerful and reliable little car that doesn’t look as frumpy as other smaller-engined cars. The 1.0-litre version is in group 2 – one of the lowest and cheapest to insure.
