The S-Class is Mercedes’ most expensive conventionally-fueled saloon. It’s larger than the E-Class Saloon, and it’s now joined by the EQS, the formidable electric super-saloon.

The 350 diesel is the most affordable and offers reasonable economy at 41mpg. The hybrid 580 e (available on long-wheel-based models) is the best choice for company car owners. It produces just 17g/km of CO2 and is able to drive 65 all-electric miles on a single charge, putting it comfortably into the 8% BiK tax band. 

If you’ve got money to burn, the Mercedes-Maybach S 680 4MATIC offers the best performance, launching from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. 

So, what do you get for your money? Well, on top of the suitably plush interior and sharp exterior styling, the seventh-generation S-Class introduces a whole suite of technological innovations to the Mercedes line-up. It’s almost concept car-like in execution:

The 12.3-inch driver’s display has 3D functionality; there’s an augmented reality HUD; the sat-nav uses five cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to render a real-time S-Class on the road as you drive; Interior Assistant now recognises eye movements, hand gestures and body language; and voice control can now learn to distinguish voices. 

Facial and fingerprint recognition provide access to the main system and Attention Assist can also recognise driver drowsiness. 

The S-Class Saloon has some big name rivals to watch out for, including the Audi A8 and the BMW 7 Series Saloon.
