The Subaru Solterra is the Japanese brand’s first fully-electric car. It’s not the only eco-friendly SUV in Subaru’s line-up, however. Both the Subaru XV and the larger Subaru Forester e-Boxer offer hybrid powertrains for the flexibility of a conventional-fuelled engine. 

The entry-level Solterra has a single front-wheel drive motor and is capable of driving 289 miles on a single charge thanks to its 71.4kWh battery pack. The Touring model adds a second motor for dependable four-wheel drive, though this drops the maximum range to 257 miles. Torque is effectively distributed between rear and front axles with the X-Mode all-wheel drive setting, which helps to maximise grip in tricky situations. 

The days of ‘range anxiety’ are long gone with the Solterra’s 150kW rapid charging capability, which will see you recharge from 20-80% in just 19 minutes. 

Driving the Solterra is a pleasant experience, too. Entry-level ‘Limited’ model comes with adaptive cruise control, heated front and rear seats, as well as a 360-degree camera and a digital rear view mirror for stress-free parking. Opt for the Touring trim and you also get synthetic leather seats, a fixed panoramic roof, and a Harman Kardon sound system.

Outside and in, the Solterra is pleasingly minimalist. It bears a strong resemblance to the Toyota bZ4x, with which it shares many of its internals. A 7-inch digital drivers’ display and central infotainment screen make navigating easy.
