The X7 is BMW’s flagship family car. It sits at the top of the Munich-based marque’s ‘X’ range, which means it’s the largest, most practical, and most expensive SUV of the lot. The X5 also has a 7-seat option, but there’s less room inside. The sportier X6 prioritises style over space with its swooping roofline, but it’s not a bad choice if you don’t need a third row of seats.

For an SUV that could fit a small car between its wheelbase, it’s never going to be the most economical. The least diesel xDrive40d, is the most frugal at 36.7mpg, which isn’t bad considering its size. But with a braked towing capacity of 3,500kg, you’ll also be able to plan bigger adventures than most rivals would permit.

7 seats come as standard, and all occupants will have ample leg and headroom. If you don’t need the 7th seat, however, you can option a six-seat configuration for a small fee. This replaces the central bench with two armchair-style seats and improves access to the rear bench. 

The X7 also has bags of boot space: 750 litres with the rear seats up, but this can be expanded to a whopping 2,120 litres with all seats fully-folded. 

You’ll also struggle to find an infotainment system on a par with BMW’s iDrive. A 12-inch infotainment screen comes as standard, with a rotary dial and voice control providing plenty of options to control your navigation and entertainment.
